![]() Holmes Publishing Co. Ltd. has its roots in the newspaper business beginning in 1929 when Ed Holmes settled into the ownership of the Provost News in Provost, Alberta. A more detailed account of those early years is available in the history book "Early Furrows" published by the Senior Citizen's Club of Provost, or the Provost News Web Site"I still hold the conviction that there is no more a free or congenial life than that of a rural Weekly Editor". -- Ed Holmes 1878-1944. In 1944, George, the youngest son of Ed Holmes, took over management of the newspaper as its editor and publisher until 1970. In that year George's love for fine commercial printing compelled him to move to Medicine Hat as an opportunity presented itself to purchase Modern Press. In the following few years his three sons joined him as the company expanded. The company purchased another Medicine Hat printing plant called Val Marshall Printing (1969) Ltd. which was eventually moved from downtown to Dunmore Road and renamed "Holmes Printing". Ron Holmes is presently the manager of Holmes Printing. Holmes Publishing owns and operates four divisions; The Provost News in Provost Alberta, managed by Richard Holmes, The Macklin Mirror in Macklin, Saskatchewan, managed by Robert Brost, The Oyen Echo in Oyen, Alberta, managed by Diana Walker and Helen Ball. |
