Wins Gold Award

Shannon Kenworthy, Chairman of the Awards for the Calgary Club of Printing House Craftsmen presents the Gold Award to Holmes Printing manager Ron Holmes in Calgary April 3. Holmes Printing won the award in the color catatogue class.

Holmes Printing has been presented with a Gold Award at the Gallery of Superb Printing awards banquet in Calgary April 3. The awards banquet is sponsored by the Calgary Club of Printing House Craftsmen and attracts entries from all over southern Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan. More than 450 entries were made this year in over a dozen categories.

The printed piece called "Weddingstar" was entered in the product catalogue class which allowed entries for product catalogues that had unlimited number of pages in four or more colors of ink. Plant manager Ron Holmes said "I am proud of everyone in the shop, from front to back and of the designer Rene Waters."

Honourable mention was made of Internet Alberta, a sister company to Holmes Printing. Under the direction of print and web page designer Rene Waters the 40-page Weddingstar catalogue came into being. The two-year old Medicine Hat design firm is becoming well known for both print and internet web page design, their web page is www.inter.ab.ca.

The client, Weddingstar, is a growing Medicine Hat Company owned by Rick Brink, which produces and assembles products for the wedding industry. Weddingstar products appear widely across Canada. Two years ago Weddingstar entered the U.S. market which called for a new design and two versions of their product catalogue both designed and printed in Medicine Hat.

Two other Calgary firms, Phoenix Press and Ronalds Printing, took gold awards in that same category and Apache Superior Printing of Calgary was awarded a merit.

Two groups of five judges each were involved in making the final decisions. The competition was based upon a point merit system which means that classes do not necessarily receive gold and that classes may have multiple winners if the entries earn enough points to place in the top 20 percent of the whole show. Each entry was awarded from 1 to 10 points per judge in five areas; layout and typography, paper and ink selection, difficulty of printing, quality of printing and finished appearance. Points were added up for a possible of 250 points
